Your Will can be their refuge

When we think about making a Will, it’s only natural to consider loved ones first and foremost. Many people also find a place in their Will to reflect other important aspects of their lives – the issues that concern them most and the causes they believe in.

By remembering Australia for UNHCR in your Will, you are helping ensure that people displaced by conflict and natural disaster receive vital support in their time of need. Beyond your lifetime, you will be providing protection, food, water, shelter, education and healthcare to some of the world’s most vulnerable people.

How your gift can help

“My children get excited to see the vegetables. It reminds us of our farm back home. These vegetables taste really good, so I don’t have to buy any from the market.”

Sahera and her family live in the world’s largest refugee camp. Like most Rohingya refugees who fled persecution and violence in August 2017, Sahera is a farmer. But when her family took shelter in Kutupalong settlement, Bangladesh, there was very little space to cultivate crops.

Through a unique project created by UNHCR, Sahera is now able to plant, harvest and enjoy her own garden-grown produce again.

Australia for UNHCR is a strong supporter of livelihoods projects that help women achieve financial independence and provide for their families.

Gifts in Wills helped change Sahera’s life. Make your gift their refuge.

1. Talk about your decision with your loved ones

2. Choose the type of legacy you would like to leave:

A residuary gift: the remainder of your Estate once everything else is taken care of
A percentage of your Estate: a specific proportion of your Estate’s value
A pecuniary gift: a specific sum of money

3. Visit a solicitor to have your Will written or updated with a codicil

4. Notify Australia for UNHCR

The following words can be used to describe the type of gift you wish to leave to Australia for UNHCR. We suggest you take our bequest brochure with you when consulting your solicitor.

Meet Dorothy, one of our dedicated supporters

Supporting refugees is an issue close to Dorothy Hoddinott’s heart. For 23 years, she was principal of Holroyd High School in Sydney, where more than half of students have a refugee background. Through her leadership, she helped students to achieve their goals, rebuild their lives and have hope for the future.

"As teachers, we have a duty of care for the children we work with. But beyond that, I just couldn’t turn my back on the injustice and unfairness I was seeing these refugee kids go through. I couldn’t ignore the inequality. I wanted to help on the global scale by donating to Australia for UNHCR"

"I become a donor to Australia for UNHCR many years ago, and when you get to a certain age it’s important to start considering your will and how you allocate a lifetime of accumulated assets. I asked myself how my support could have the greatest value and impact, and leaving some of my assets to Australia for UNHCR was part of that. When there is a humanitarian crisis, UNHCR is there on the ground."
