UNHCR is expanding cash assistance so millions of displaced people can meet their needs with dignity and become more resilient.
Most displaced people spend their cash on everyday essentials, such as rent and groceries. Once they are able to meet their basic needs, some are able to spend their cash on education, pay off debt or build businesses.
UNHCR provides shelter for people at every stage of their displacement – in camps and long-term settlements, in urban settings, and as they return home to rebuild their lives.
The simplest shelter can be life-saving for families escaping from conflict, protecting them from the elements, providing privacy, and allowing them to maintain their dignity and daily rituals.
Quality education helps refugee children prepare for the future and recover from the effects of trauma. Access to a safe place to learn reduces the chance of exploitative and dangerous child labour. It can also greatly reduce the risk of early child marriages for girls.
UNHCR also helps displaced people find work or start their own businesses, helping refugees earn much-needed income while also instilling greater dignity and confidence.
The majority of funds raised by Australia for UNHCR are directed to UNHCR’s emergency operations, providing the ready funds and resources to respond quickly and effectively in situations of crisis and disaster.
