The Horn of Africa is experiencing its worst drought in four decades. Combined with the sky-rocketing price of food and fuel, 18.4 million people are facing extreme hunger in countries such as Ethiopia, Kenya, Somalia, Sudan and South Sudan.

Refugees and displaced people are at heightened risk. They face a perfect storm of conflict, climate change, and the rising cost of food and fuel. According to the UN Secretary-General António Guterres, these factors have combined “to tip tens of millions of people over the edge into food insecurity, followed by malnutrition, mass hunger and famine.”

Millions of displaced families will fall deeper into hunger without our help.

“Families do not know where their next meal will come from and are taking on huge debt, selling off what they can, or sending their children to work,” said Clementine Nkweta-Salami, UNHCR’s Regional Bureau Director for the East, Horn of Africa and the Great Lakes.

“More and more children below the age of five years are experiencing high levels of stunting and wasting, as they lack the nutrients to grow and develop.”

Beyenesh and her family fled their home in Tigray due to violence. Now she lives with her children in the Five Angels site in Shire, which shelters forcibly displaced families. She says they are safe, but don’t have enough to eat.

"We are hungry, sometimes we just eat a piece of bread without any sauce, but at least we are safe.”

UNHCR is on the ground providing life-saving supplies, including water, shelter and cash assistance. But we urgently need more support to help vulnerable families stave off hunger and malnutrition.

Please give generously to help refugee families survive this devastating humanitarian catastrophe.
