About Australia for UNHCR

Australia for UNHCR is the UN Refugee Agency’s national partner in Australia, raising funds and awareness to help UNHCR deliver humanitarian relief to displaced families across the globe.

Australia for UNHCR unites caring Australians – individuals, community groups and businesses – to support refugees and people displaced from their homes, families and countries by conflict and persecution. We advocate and fundraise for refugee protection, emergency aid and long-term support and solutions, helping UNHCR reach millions of displaced people each year.

Australians empowering refugees

Australia for UNHCR enables Australians to contribute to global humanitarian relief work. Support comes in many different forms, such as donations to our emergency appeals, regular giving, community fundraising events, major gifts from trusts or foundations, and corporate partnerships.

These gifts have a direct impact on the lives of displaced communities. From rushing life-saving aid to civilians fleeing the frontlines of conflict, to supporting longer-term projects in health care, education, vocational training, prevention of conflict-related sexual- and gender-based violence, or livelihood and income support – Australia for UNHCR is committed to standing with refugees and other displaced people on their journey to safety.

Nobody chooses to be a refugee. But we can all choose to contribute to their protection, resilience and independence.

A leading refugee voice in Australia

Australia for UNHCR was established in 2000 and, with the support of generous Australians, today is one of the major private sector donors to UNHCR globally. Our founder and National Director, Naomi Steer, is a lifelong campaigner for human rights. A lawyer and former diplomat, she has travelled to many conflict zones, including Afghanistan, Sri Lanka and Somalia, to see first-hand how Australian donors are making a positive difference to the lives of countless displaced people.

Australia for UNHCR is also at the forefront of education and advocacy, working with media, ambassadors and influencers to educate Australians about the plight of displaced people around the world and UNHCR’s role in protecting them.

Australia for UNHCR is committed to operating at the highest ethical standards, and is a member of the Australian Council for International Development (ACFID), the Fundraising Institute of Australia (FIA) and the Public Fundraising Regulatory Association (PFRA).
