Glenys Fitzpatrick shares why she’s passionate about making a lasting impact on the lives of refugees and displaced people.
Can you tell us a little bit about yourself?
I’ve been a supporter of Australia for UNHCR since 2012. I recently attended the World Refugee Day lunch and really enjoyed learning more about the work of UNHCR to support refugees and displaced people.
I enjoy supporting worthwhile causes. I’ve had a fortunate life, and I support several other charities. When I was younger, I used to love buying clothes and things I didn’t need. I was very privileged and lucky in my existence. I later realised that I was never going to find myself worrying about my next meal or wanting anything. I changed my mindset completely. I started to empathise with people who had far less than what I had and would rather help them than buy something else I don’t need.
Why did you choose to leave a gift in your Will to Australia for UNHCR?
I feel extremely sorry for people forced to flee their homes, living in vulnerable situations because of war, violence or natural disasters. And although I can’t fix everything, I’d like to give them some extra funding to help. I think they should be able to share in my wealth.
What would you say to someone considering leaving a gift in their Will to support refugees?
I decided to support Australia for UNHCR a long time ago because it was a worthwhile cause. Please consider looking at the circumstances you’ve been fortunate to have and empathise with those who have far less.
How do you want to be remembered? One of the most inspiring ways to ensure your values live on is to leave a gift in your Will, like Glenys.
