Triggered by heavy monsoon rains, catastrophic floods in Pakistan have washed away homes and affected millions of people.
UNHCR is scaling up support in Pakistan, where torrential monsoon rains and floods have now affected more than 80 million people and caused widespread destruction.
More than 1,300 people have died, including 350 children, with fears the situation could deteriorate further. Among those affected are some 800,000 Afghan refugees.
The response to our flood appeal from Australian donors has been incredible and we are so grateful for your support. With your help, UNHCR has launched a huge airlift operation to send essential supplies to people in the worst-affected areas, including sleeping mats, kitchen sets, mosquito nets and solar lamps.
UNHCR has mobilised 1.2 million aid items to help 50,000 households, including refugees, displaced people and host communities in the worst hit areas of Sindh, Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa provinces. UNHCR has also provided sandbags to help people build up defences around their homes.
These vital supplies are reaching people like Saleem Khan, a 25-year-old farmer, whose home was inundated by the floods.
“We were so scared. We never saw such a scary night. We were wondering how we would cross these waters, but my father calmed us down. We left everything behind.”
Luckily, Saleem’s family found higher ground and received a tent from UNHCR, however, Saleem is already thinking about the challenge of rebuilding his home.
With your help, UNHCR will be able to stay on the ground in the coming months to help flood-affected communities.
Your donation can provide refugees and local communities in Pakistan with emergency support like shelter, household supplies and blankets.
Donate today to support these families who so desperately need your help.
