With violence escalating in the Kharkiv region, you can send critical aid to displaced families.
Violence has escalated in the northeastern Kharkiv region, claiming lives and forcing thousands of people to evacuate. The majority of evacuees are extremely vulnerable, including older people and people with disabilities who were unable to escape earlier in the war.
You can provide life-saving aid and protection to families fleeing conflict in Kharkiv. Here are three stories showing the difference you can make.
Roman escaped Kharkiv without any legal documents after losing his home and belongings to shelling by Russian forces.
“The house was burnt to the ashes together with my passport and all the documents,” he says.
UNHCR has been working tirelessly to support people like Roman who’ve lost everything. Our teams have provided him with shelter and legal aid, helping him obtain crucial documents and apply for compensation for damaged property.
But as attacks on the Kharkiv region continue, the future remains uncertain.
Liudmyla and Serhii were forced to leave their village close to the frontline of the fighting in Kharkiv region.
“It became impossible to stay because of the constant shelling,” says Liudmyla.
UNHCR provided Liudmyla and Serhii with emergency shelter and cash assistance to cover their basic needs. Now they live in a centre for displaced Ukrainians, waiting to go home one day.
“We still hope to return one day and continue the life we had before,” says Liudmyla.
Halyna and Volodymyr fled their home in Kharkiv and arrived at a centre for displaced people in central Ukraine with few belongings.
“We were only given five minutes to pack our things,” says Halyna. “When we arrived, we didn’t have any money or essential items. We needed help urgently.”
UNHCR is distributing cash assistance so displaced families can pay for everyday items like food, medicine and clothing.
“We received the money very quickly. It would be very hard without it," says Halyna.
Our teams are also repairing centres housing vulnerable Ukrainians and providing residents with new furniture, legal support and livelihood trainings so they can rebuild their lives with dignity.
“The volunteers installed toilets, new windows and doors. Now we have hot water and washing machines," she says.
