This World Refugee Day on June 20 we stand together to celebrate the strength, resilience and courage of refugees around the world.

Talar was a high school student in Aleppo when the war broke out in Syria. Amid the conflict and chaos, her family struggled to go about their daily lives.

In 2017, during her final year of university, Talar’s family were resettled in Australia with support from UNHCR. Today, she combines her part-time administration role at Australia for UNHCR with work as a graphic designer and studying for a Bachelor of Architectural Design.

“I have my new life in Sydney,
in a place where I know I am safe.”

Each day thousands of families are forced to flee their homes and leave everything behind – people like you and me. UNHCR’s latest Global Trends report reveals the total number of forcibly displaced people worldwide has reached over 70 million.

Many families have experienced years of displacement and cannot return home because of continued conflict or persecution. In these circumstances, UNHCR helps resettle refugees to a third country.

Thanks to generous Australian supporters like you, former refugees like Talar have the chance of a new life.
