Nobody chooses to be a refugee.

But every person forced to flee has the right to seek protection.

Each day thousands of families are forced to flee their homes and leave everything behind. People like you, people like me

All refugees and asylum seekers have the right to adequate protection and appropriate long-term solutions in safety and dignity.

As an Australian NGO, representing the voices of thousands of Australians, we echo the UN Refugee Agency's alarm at the unfolding humanitarian emergency facing refugees and asylum seekers on Manus Island due to the abrupt decrease in support.

Stand #WithRefugees and add your voice to a global movement demanding governments safeguard the rights of refugees everywhere.

Why your voice matters

This petition will help UNHCR:

  • Ensure every refugee family has somewhere safe to live.
  • Ensure every refugee child gets an education.
  • Ensure every refugee can work or learn new skills to make a positive contribution to their community.

Your name will be included when the final petition is presented at the next UN General Assembly, representing the voices of citizens around the world.

A Global Compact for Refugees

The #WithRefugees campaign calls on citizens across the world to support refugee rights and back the New York Declaration, a commitment by the governments of 193 countries to establish a ‘Global Compact for Refugees’.

The New York Declaration resulted from an unprecedented United Nations summit, held in September 2016 to address the large movements of refugees and migrants taking place across the world.

The declaration reaffirms the basic principles of refugee protection and commits to establishing a new framework to address the large numbers of people being forced to flee. This new framework will safeguard refugee rights and better support countries impacted by large population movements. Countries will be asked to sign up to a Global Compact for Refugees, setting out concrete action to protect and support refugees.

UNHCR is leading the development of this Global Compact. As part of this process it will present the final #WithRefugees petition to the United Nations General Assembly in 2018, to represent the voices of citizens from around the world.
