Outline & Purpose of Role:

Australia for UNHCR is an international aid agency that raises funds from Australian donors to support the humanitarian operations of the UN Refugee Agency. Established in 2000 as part of a global fundraising network it has now raised more than $350 million from a broad network of individuals, community and corporate partners.

The Public Relations Manager works closely with the Head of Communication & Public Affairs and Content Manager to deliver PR strategies and activities that drive the organisation’s brand building and convert new supporters to fundraising.

This role requires strong strategy to guide our many communication channels, increase our profile and deepen our base of support. It also requires effective project management and multitasking across media, social media, email, print, events and other channels.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and execute PR and channel strategy with plans to drive brand profile, engagement and conversion to fundraising appeals and other activities
  • Collaborate closely with HOCPA and Content Manager to develop high engagement content for key channels and prepare media engagement materials, research story ideas, pitch ideas direct to media and respond to media requests
  • Support fundraising teams to deliver PR strategy that supports appeals and operations, and support emergency and crisis communications when required
  • Write and coordinate communications products for consumer, corporate, donor and staff communications as required
  • Identify opportunities to deliver relevant and cut-through stories for specific channels / audiences
  • Coordinate Special Representative and influencer program for long term collaborative relationships and ensure spokespeople are prepared for PR activities, including any required support
  • Maintain proactive and reactive messages and positioning for organisation-wide use, including emerging issues and opportunities

The successful applicant will possess the following attributes:

  • Experience developing and implementing PR/communications plans
  • Strong oral and written communications skills
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Ability to liaise with and engage stakeholders and third party suppliers.
  • Relevant tertiary qualifications in media, marketing or public relations.
  • Communications experience in an international / not-for-profit environment
  • Strong understanding of Australian broadcast and consumer media and social media
  • Advanced computer skills, including all Microsoft office products and ability to use databases and CRM.
  • A strong commitment to human rights, international affairs and UNCHR’s work with refugees and displaced people.
