Australia for UNHCR believes that every person forced to flee their home due to conflict or persecution has the right to seek protection in another country. This principle underpins the 1951 Refugee Convention, a cornerstone of international law which also asserts that a refugee should not be returned to a country where they face serious threats to their life or freedom.

As an Australian NGO, representing the voices of many thousands of Australians, Australia for UNHCR echoes the UN Refugee Agency's alarm at the unfolding humanitarian emergency facing refugees and asylum seekers on Manus Island due to the abrupt decrease in support. All refugees and asylum seekers have the right to adequate protection, including safe shelter, water, food and medicine, and to appropriate long-term solutions in safety and dignity.

Please join us and show you stand with refugees. Sign the petition today and join a growing global movement demanding governments safeguard the rights of refugees everywhere. Your name will be included when the final petition is presented at the next UN General Assembly, representing the voices of citizens around the world.

Nobody chooses to be a refugee. But every person forced to flee conflict or persecution has the right to seek protection.
