Haiti

HaitiHaiti is one of the poorest countries in the world - one of the least able to cope with a natural disaster of such magnitude. Thankfully, though, donors like you responded generously to help UNHCR provide emergency relief.

The emergency: The devastating earthquake that struck Haiti on January 12, 2010 killed more than 220,000 people and left 1.5 million homeless.

UNHCR's role: UNHCR provided and coordinated emergency shelter for the homeless population and provided legal protection for those who fled to the neighbouring Dominican Republic.

Relief provided: Thanks to your generous donations, the UN Refugee Agency was able to send an Emergency Response Team to provide emergency shelter for more than 100,000 people within 72 hours.

We also sent expert staff to the Dominican Republic to provide legal protection for Haitians who were injured and evacuated there, and have been providing long-term support for the displaced populations in and around               Port-au-Prince.

With your support, we distributed:

  • 2,130 light weight tents
  • 18,850 rolls of plastic sheetings for 103,400 beneficiaries
  • 17,400 solar lamps

In total we have provided more than 200,000 people with emergency shelter and assistance.

Total funds raised to date: AUD $130,000
