Australians supporting the UN Refugee Agency
Dadaab was originally designed to shelter 90,000 refugees. It is now home to more than 300,000 refugees, making it the biggest refugee camp in the world. Thanks to you and other donors, UNHCR has been able to provide emergency relief for thousands of vulnerable families, most of whom have fled war-torn Somalia with nothing.
The emergency: Dangerously overcrowded and chronically underfunded, the world's biggest refugee camp was fast becoming a humanitarian crisis in its own right.
UNHCR's role: UNHCR continues to provide and coordinate food, water, shelter, infrastructure, and medical care for over 300,000 refugees in Dadaab.
Relief provided: Thanks to your generous donations, the UN Refugee Agency was able to upgrade water and sanitation systems, and provide much-needed relief such as tents, medical supplies, sleeping mats, blankets and jerry cans.
We were also able to expand the area of the settlement, which has enabled more refugees to live there
Total funds raised to date: AUD $574,000
