Indian Ocean Earthquake-Tsunami Emergency: Progress Report (Jan-Jun, 05)

On 26 December 2004, a massive earthquake measuring over 9.0 on the Richter scale occurred near Simeulue Island off the west coast of northern Sumatra, Indonesia. The earthquake rendered powerful tsunami waves exceeding 10 meters in height, wreaking havoc on the coastal areas facing the Indian Ocean. As many as 11 countries were affected. This natural disaster of an unprecedented scale claimed the lives of more than 290,000 persons, and destroyed infrastructure and livelihood.
