Stories From Australia

Warren Adcock, Volunteer

Warren Adcock was already semi-retired and serving as Chairman of Asset Super when he first joined Australia for UNHCR. The father of five comes in a day or two a week to help the Donor Services Team.

"I hadn't heard of Australia for UNHCR until I met Naomi Steer (the National Director). In fact, I knew very little about UNHCR in general. But when I met Naomi I was intrigued.

"Once I was fully retired I had more time to offer, so I thought, why not come in and help?

"Like many of the volunteers, I work with the Donor Services Team, contacting new donors to let them know how much we appreciate their support.  I enjoy this work and am always pleasantly surprised by how friendly and approachable our donors are. But my work with the office goes beyond that. I bring my family to events and we all get involved. It's such a learning experience.

"This work has really opened my eyes. I never would have believed something as simple as a Clean Delivery Kit could make such a difference. And my son-in-law - who I dragged along to one of the lunches - was so moved by the refugee story he heard that he immediately jumped up to help.

"It's amazing how doing something for others can give you so much satisfaction yourself. And that's what I see and appreciate so much in the office. I'll keep on coming in here and offering my help for as long as I'm able."

Our office is deeply indebted to the fantastic work done by our volunteers and interns who provide invaluable help with various administrative tasks and research projects in the Sydney office. Learn more about volunteering.
