10 Years In Review Increasing access to clean, safe drinking water

Contaminated water kills the world's poor and displaced in their millions, however almost all of these deaths are preventable. UNHCR's water projects aim to provide at least 20 litres of clean, safe drinking water per refugee per day.

This dramatically reduces the risk of water-borne diseases such as cholera, and, by cutting down the time taken to collect water, also enables children to spend more time in school. Australian donors have helped fund water projects in Nakivale Refugee Settlement in Uganda and the Jerer Valley in Ethiopia, as well as in emergency settings such as Chad and Darfur.
