UN Declares Famine in Somalia 21.07.11

21 July 2011

The United Nations has declared a famine in southern Somalia, as East Africa countries are experiencing the worst drought for 60 years. The UN defines famine as a “humanitarian catastrophe.” This is an extreme social upheaval with complete lack of food access, so basic needs can’t be met. The result is mass starvation, death and displacement. So far over 10 million people have been affected in the region.

Leading Law Firm offers lifeline to Pakistan Flood Victims

Corrs Chambers Westgarth, one of Australia’s leading law firms, has responded to the Pakistan flood emergency with an immediate donation of $20,000 to Australia for UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency’s charity in Australia. UNHCR was the first agency to respond to the Pakistan floods. Corrs has also pledged to match all donations made by their staff.
