Australia for UNHCR’s Schools Fundraising Program

Australia for UNHCR's Schools Fundraising Program provides all Australian schools with an opportunity to support the global work of the UN Refugee Agency, learn about refugee issues around the world and get students involved in fun and creative fundraising events and activities.

Two of our current school fundraising projects are listed below. If you'd like more information on the projects please call us on 1300 361 288 or email liam.walsh@australiaforunhcr.org.au

Some fundraising activities your school may wish to organise:

  • A student art exhibition with an entry fee;
  • Live like a refugee for a day;
  • A community fundraising event such as a school fete, trivia night etc;
  • A sponsored activity such as a walkathon, fun run or a ‘camp for refugees' night.

Examples of emergency relief items your school can provide to refugee families in need:

  • $25 can cover the cost of full medical check-ups for 20 refugee children.
  • $90 can provide emergency shelter for ten refugee families.
  • $114 can purchase one all-season tent to protect a family of five.
  • $210 can provide enough blankets to keep 150 children warm on winter nights.
  • $360 can sink a well to provide clean, safe drinking water.

UNHCR also publishes the following materials for use in schools: Magazines, books, films, posters and display material. If you'd like some of these materials please e-mail the UNHCR regional office with your request: aulcapi@unhcr.org

School aid

School Aid is partnering with Australia for UNHCR to engage primary school children in fundraising for the South Kivu Schools Project in Democratic Republic of the Congo.

The project will build and rehabilitate schools, supply desks, chairs, blackboards, books and uniforms allowing 33,000 returning refugee children access to education and a brighter future and more importantly, hope.

To register with School Aid to join this initiative, please follow the link: http://www.schoolaid.org.au/

All information about the project and details about fundraising will be contained on this page.

Geography Teachers Association of New South Wales

The Geography Teachers Association of New South Wales is engaging students in fundraising to build a classroom as part of a secondary school in Nakivale Refugee Settlement in Uganda.

They aim to raise $15,000 through iniatives in NSW schools.

The camp, established in 1991, has never had a secondary school and so for the first time in almost 20 years over 350 refugee children will have the opportunity to attend secondary school for the first time.

Click here to find out more about what we are doing in the Nakivale Secondary School project.

If you'd like your school to fundraise for a new secondary school in Nakivale, please register a page on everyday hero. Visit the following link:

http://www.everydayhero.com.au - Follow the instructions on how to build a fundraising page. Please register you school name as your user name.

If you'd like further information on the project or advice on on how you might set up a fundraising page, please call us on 1300 361 288 or email Liam Walsh: liam.walsh@australiaforunhcr.org.au
