The humanitarian situation in Timor- Leste is marked by internal displacement of at least 10% of the population, with many people unable to return to their homes because of ongoing violence and destruction that has occurred over the past 12 months.
Despite all ongoing efforts to promote the return, resettlement and reintegration of IDP's, this issue is far from resolved. In many areas there is a lack of food and increasing health issues.
UNHCR has a history of involvement in the region, repatriating more than 220,000 East Timorese refugees who had fled the violence and upheaval surrounding the August 1999 UN-organised referendum on independence from Indonesia.
