Somalia Emergency
Increasing violence and uncertainty in Somalia have caused a sharp rise in refugee numbers in Kenya. Around 300 Somali refugees have arrived in Kenya every week since the beginning of the year, and are now increasing dramatically. By the end of October, more than a thousand people were making the crossing every day.
Geoff Wordley, Senior Officer with UNHCR's Emergency Response Team is on the ground in Kenya. "We already had a serious situation here, with 32,000 Somalis entering Kenya since January. Now we could be looking at 50,000 by Christmas - and as many as 80,000 in the new year. This would see our supplies and facilities completely overwhelmed - the food supply is not even assured beyond December."
There's growing pressure on resources in the three large refugee camps at Dadaab, but it's the Refugee Transit Centre at the border that is really strained.
Right now UNHCR teams are working to avert a humanitarian crisis on the Kenyan border. UNHCR will also be expanding facilities in the three camps at Dadaab.
