UNHCR

Malnutrition in Kenya and Darfur

Situational Overview

The Dadaab refugee camps in Kenya were established to cater to the influx of refugees from neighbouring Somalia. Currently, the three camps Ifo, Dagahaley and Hagadera are home to about 160,000 refugees, of whom some 35,000 are estimated to be under-fives. Many refugees are part of a recent influx, fleeing conflict in Somalia and large scale flooding which cut Dadaab off from supply routes for nearly two months.

These camps have experienced a dramatic upsurge in malnutrition, particularly in young children. More than a quarter of children in the Dadaab camps are acutely or severely malnourished.

Assistance is also urgently needed in Darfur, where many camps are having to run emergency feeding programs.

Breastfeeding is a lifeline to infants and young children in emergencies. And critically, UNHCR is active working to protect and support appropriate infant and young child feeding practices in camps such as Dadaab.

UNHCR's Response

With your help, UNHCR can take immediate action to set in place necessary food programs and help nourish refugee children in camps in Darfur and Kenya.

Here are some of the emergency foods that you'll be helping to provide:

$105 can provide 34 cartons of F100 therapeutic milk which treats severely malnourished children.

$250 can provide 13 cartons of Plumpynut

Each carton contains 150 sachets. It takes three sachets a day to keep a malnourished child well.

$500 can provide 38 refugee households with vitamin supplements preventing a range of serious health problems.
