DARFUR

Since 2003, the people of Darfur, a province of Sudan, have been subject to repeated attacks by militia groups. Hundreds of villages have been burned to the ground, more than 300,000 people have been killed and thousands of women and girls have been raped.

Of the 4.7 million people displaced by the violence, 250,000 are sheltering in twelve large refugee camps in eastern Chad. Another 2.7 million remain in Darfur itself, in sprawling camps for the internally displaced (IDPs). Many relief agencies have been expelled from Darfur and the situation remains extremely insecure. The ongoing emergency in Darfur and Chad is considered the worst humanitarian crisis in the world today.

As Head Agency in the refugee camps in eastern Chad, UNHCR oversees the delivery of all shelter and non-food relief, water and protection services. The logistics are complex with the camps located in a remote desert region with poor roads. UNHCR has maintained an Emergency Response Team in Chad since 2003 to assist with water and construction projects, the transfer of new arrivals from the Sudanese border and the distribution of 100,000s of tents and emergency items.

UNHCR is one of the few international agencies still working in Darfur. In this highly restrictive and volatile environment, our teams are responsible for IDP protection and for all relief and services in Darfur's displacement camps.
