Overview

In the three years since conflict began in Syria, more than 2.8 million refugees have fled their homes. Inside Syria, more than 6.4 million residents are internally displaced. The crisis in Syria is the largest humanitarian operation in history. Thousands of Syrians seeking safety are pouring across borders each day. Within Syria, there are some 10.8 million people in need of assistance. This is one of the largest refugee exoduses in recent history, and over half of these refugees are children.

Five years ago, Syria was the world’s second largest refugee-hosting country, however Syrians are now about to replace Afghans as the biggest refugee population worldwide.

"Syria has become the great tragedy of this century - a disgraceful humanitarian calamity with suffering and displacement unparalleled in recent history. The only solace is the humanity shown by the neighbouring countries in welcoming and saving the lives of so many refugees." - António Guterres, UN High Commissioner for Refugees.

As the exodus of Syrian refugees continues to escalate, humanitarian needs remain high. Many have lost relatives, their homes, belongings and livelihoods. When Syrian families finally arrive at a safe place, they are traumatised, scared and vulnerable.

Millions of people are relying on UNHCR and its partners for assistance and protection. UNHCR is working around the clock to keep them safe and warm, providing them with shelter, sleeping mats, blankets, food, medical care and access to education. Urgent response is needed to meet these needs of the growing number of displaced Syrians and refugees.

Please make a donation today and help UNHCR provide shelter, assistance and protection for Syrian refugees.

MORE INFORMATION: Read the latest updates, statistics and information on how UNHCR and other agencies are responding to the Syria crisis

Note: Should the funds raised exceed the amount required to meet the immediate and longer term needs of the people in the affected areas, Australia for UNHCR will direct donations to our Emergency Programs for Refugees to enable us to rapidly address future emergencies as they occur.

How we help

UNHCR is on the ground providing urgently needed relief to millions of Syrians as the bitter winter sets in, distributing stoves and fuel for heating, insulation for tents, blankets, mattresses and waterproof footwear.

Emergency teams have continued to operate despite blocked roads from weather conditions. Alternative shelters are also being prepared for refugees whose tents may be affected by the snow, rain and flooding. Your support will help Syrian families receive this essential aid.

Please make a donation today to help Syrians get through one of the harshest winters ever.

UNHCR’s role in the Syrian Refugee Crisis

UNHCR is the lead agency coordinating the Syrian Regional Response Plan on the ground - a joint effort between seven UN agencies, 27 national and international NGOs and partners, and the host governments of Jordan, Lebanon, Turkey and Iraq. The Response Plan covers three key objectives:
•    Registration, monitoring and protection
•    Emergency relief and assistance
•    Contingency planning to deal with influxes of refugees into neighbouring countries

With your support, UNHCR has deployed more than 600 staff in the region, and is delivering immediate and effective response through humanitarian aid delivery, shelter, emergency health care and protection and security. As a result of your help, UNHCR has been able to help meet the basic needs of more than 3.3 million people, handing out more than 8 million essential relief items.

In 2013, UNHCR delivered millions of relief items to Syrian refugees, including:
•    1.7 million blankets
•    300,000 kitchen sets
•    650,000 sleeping mats
•    110,000 tents
•    5,000 winterisation kits
•    4,000 stoves

Most refugees who reach their country of asylum have very limited means and require immediate assistance to cover their basic needs. The key needs of those fleeing are for shelter, basic non-food items (i.e. jerry cans, blankets, kitchen equipment), healthcare and education.

With the cold weather conditions, UNHCR's key priority is providing refugees with gas heaters, extra blankets, sleeping mats, emergency clothing and financial assistance.

To help Syrian refugees, please make an urgent donation today.
