Overview

The current turmoil in Syria has forced an estimated 60,000 refugees to flee in response to escalating violence between rebel groups and government forces.  Thousands of Syrians continue to cross borders into Turkey, Lebanon, Jordan and Iraq, with UNHCR anticipating that many thousands more will need to flee their homes in the coming weeks.

Since the uprising began in March 2011, the UN estimates that clashes between rebels and government forces has seen almost 8,000 people killed and some 230,000 people displaced since the conflict began.

The majority of those trying to escape the conflict flee with nothing but the clothes on their backs. Please make a donation today and help the UN Refugee Agency provide life-saving shelter, assistance and protection for Syrians crossing into Jordan, Lebanon, Turkey and Iraq.

Note: Should the funds raised exceed the amount required to meet the immediate and longer term needs of the people in the affected areas, Australia for UNHCR will direct donations to our Emergency Programs for Refugees to enable us to rapidly address future emergencies as they occur.

How we help

The UN Refugee Agency is the lead agency coordinating the Syrian Regional Response Plan - a joint effort between seven UN agencies, 27 national and international NGOs and partners, and the host governments of Jordan, Lebanon, Turkey and Iraq.

The Response Plan covers three key objectives:

  • Registration, monitoring and protection;
  • Emergency relief and assistance for approximately 100,000 refugees for at least 6 months and
  • Contingency planning in case of a further mass influx of refugees into neighbouring countries.

The key needs of those fleeing are for shelter, basic non-food items (i.e. jerry cans, blankets, kitchen sets), healthcare and education. UNHCR is on the ground coordinating relief yet the crisis continues to escalate and the needs remain high. To help UNHCR continue to provide life-saving assistance to those fleeing Syria, please donate today.
