Stamp out Malaria

Malaria remains a leading cause of illness and death among refugees in sub-Saharan Africa. Transmitted by mosquitoes, malaria kills a child every 30 seconds – 3000 children a day, and nearly one million people a year. It poses a particular threat to refugees, two thirds of whom live in malaria-endemic areas with the risks compounded by poor standards of shelter and nutrition and a lack of access to healthcare. Women and children, who comprise of to 80% of most camp populations, are especially at risk.

UNHCR has developed a Strategic Malaria Plan to prevent and treat malaria among refugees, and works across three key areas to educate affected populations, prevent transmission and to ensure early diagnosis and prompt treatment with safe and effective drugs.
