Nakivale 2009 - Help us build a secondary school

Nakivale Refugee Settlement is situated on Lake Nakivale on the way down to the Rwandan border. There is a smaller twin settlement called Oruchinga nearby. Together, these two settlements house just over 30,000 refugees. They cover a huge area - 84km² - with 48 villages connected by rough roads and walking tracks. Nakivale is a very old settlement. It was one of the main camps sheltering Rwandan refugees after the genocide in 1991.

It's now notable for being very multicultural - home to refugees from Somalia, Rwanda, Burundi, Ethiopia, Eritrea, Kenya and Sudan and - most recently - from the Democratic Republic of Congo. Nearly a third of the refugees are now from the DRC. Many of these have only arrived in the past 18 months.

Given that Nakivale has existed since 1991 a secondary school would be of incredible significance to the community there. It would be unprecedented in terms of education but also of hope. Boredom is one of the greatest risks in a refugee community and an educational opportunity of this kind will substantially improve the lives of those at risk to sexual based gender violence or early marriage as well as potential drug or alcohol abuse.

Education

Education is the long-term solution for refugees globally and more than 350 children could receive secondary education starting in the first year and a minimum of another 120 each year after that. For refugees in a protracted situation, like Nakivale, the opportunity for secondary education will impact directly on the children, their families and the community.

If you'd like your school to fundraise for a new secondary school in Nakivale, please register a fundraising page on everyday hero. Visit the following link to visit everyday hero:
