Situational Overview

Of the estimated 529,000 maternal deaths that occur globally each year, 48% occur in Africa with refugee women and girls being particularly vulnerable.

Australia for UNHCR has launched its Safe Mother and Baby Program Appeal to make childbirth safer for refugee mothers and babies. Central to the program is the Clean Delivery Kit - a small plastic bag containing a clean blade, a plastic sheet, swaddling cloth and a piece of string.

One country of particular focus for the Safe Mother and Baby Program is Chad where health workers are facing a maternity health crisis. UNHCR hopes to distribute up to 35,000 Clean delivery klits in the next year and provide health worker training, community education, and emergency obstetric care.

What your money can provide:

$106 can provide 40 pregnant women with Clean Delivery kits
$200 will allow us to supply 10 Midwife kits for trained birth assistances, containing a wider range of surgical materials, medicines, an apron, a raincoat and torch for nightcalls
$670 can provide nutritional supplements, baby blankets, baby clothes, soap etc for 100 pregnant women
$1333 can provide 6 months supply of medical materials and supplies for a delivery room in a refugee camp

UNHCR also provides training for midwives and maternity health workers. Pregnant women are screened for dangerous infections like malaria and HIV/AIDS. UNHCR funds health centres and delivery rooms in many refugee settlements and in the event of complications, we provide hospital referrals and emergency transport.
