Although the UN Refugee Agency is not usually involved in natural disaster relief, it has responded to the cyclone crisis because of the scale of the devastation, the urgent needs of the victims and the proximity of its relief supplies to Myanmar.
UNHCR is part of the joint UN emergency response to the cyclone and is the lead agency for shelter in the initial phase. We will provide shelter for 250,000 people affected by the disaster.
UNHCR has been operating in Myanmar for more than 2 decades and has extensive experience working with the government and other partners in delivery of aid. UNHCR has 70 staff on the ground in the country.
