Kenyan Turmoil: The UN Refugee Agency mobilises

The UN Refugee Agency has launched its relief operation in support of hundreds of displaced Kenyans in the capital, Nairobi and those in Uganda.

To date up to 600 people are believed to have been killed in the post-election violence in Kenya with another 255,000 people displaced from their homes.

UNHCR is distributing kits containing plastic sheeting for shelter, blankets, mats, kitchen sets, mosquito nets and soap to  needy families who are camping in churches, schools and police stations in the city's poor suburbs.

"They burnt our house. They told us to get out before setting the house on fire. I have nothing. Even this mattress I have been given here. My children are sleeping out in the cold with no blankets," said 30-year-old Pauline, who fled from her tiny tin shack in Mathare slums. She has found refuge in nearby Huruma police station, which now houses an estimated 1,200 people.

UNHCR is set to provide further aid for up to 100,000 people. As an Emergency Response Team partner, your donations help UNHCR provide assistance to those displaced by conflict.
