The LRA is well known for its brutality and its practice of abducting children, training them to terrorise their own people as child soldiers. For several years now, UNHCR has been providing shelter and support for thousands of people fleeing LRA attacks in Uganda and South Sudan. Now the group has re-emerged in the Democratic Republic of the Congo's (DRC) northern province of Orientale, attacking several villages in the region.

Humanitarian workers, including our UNHCR staff on the ground, have found it extremely difficult to gain access - let alone deliver food and relief - to these remote villages. We have, however, managed to establish an emergency operation in the small town of Dungu, which has received an influx of 100,000 people, tripling its population. Water and sanitation facilities are under extreme pressure, and shelter items, food and medicines are all in desperately short supply.
