Darfur/Chad Emergency
UNHCR remains despite forced departure of 16 NGOs from Sudan
The government of Sudan has expelled some 6500 humanitarian staff from the country.
With some 4.7 million Sudanese - including 2.7 million internally displaced - already receiving assistance in Darfur, disruptions to aid access inside Sudan could cause new population movements in the region, placing even greater stress on UNHCR and the other agencies that remain.
The Situation in Darfur
An estimated 300,000 people have been killed and 2.9 million forced from their homes since early 2003 when rebel forces took up arms against the Sudanese government.
UNHCR has been operating in Darfur since June 2004. Our work for internally displaced people as part of the UN team in Darfur has helped IDPs stay as close to home as possible while also relieving pressure on neighbouring Chad, where UNHCR and its partners are already caring for nearly 250,000 refugees from Darfur in a string of 12 remote camps spread over 600 kms near the Sudan border. These isolated camps and the remote communities surrounding them are already struggling to provide the basics needed to sustain 250,000 refugees. In addition, there are some 180,000 internally displaced persons in eastern Chad.

What your money can do:
UNHCR is one of the few relief agencies still working in Darfur today. However the organisation receives only a limited 2% subsidy from the United Nations to do its life saving work. For the rest, UNHCR relies on voluntary contributions - so please donate today:
$105 can provide enough blankets for seven families.
$142 can provide a household kit for a displaced family in Darfur.
$325 can provide fuel efficient stoves for 50 families as well as training on their usage.
$576 can provide counselling and support services for six victims of sexual assault.
$1282 can provide comprehensive income generation training for twenty women in activities such as poultry farming, soap making or bread making.
