Clean Water for Africa
The Situation
On average, refugees in Africa receive only 8 litres of water per day…for all drinking, washing and cooking. That's only one litre more than the minimum required for survival. Clean safe drinking water is said to be more precious than diamonds in Africa. Every 8 seconds a child dies as a result of water borne disease. Lack of clean safe water also means refugees often have to travel for hours and sometimes days to collect water. Girls, whose job it is to collect water, often have to miss school.
UNHCR at Work
Ethiopia is one country where we are making a difference. Thanks to one UNHCR water project, clean water flows from 24 water points around the town and nearby refugee camps. That's enough water for washing, so hygiene has improved. The women no longer spend their days trekking across the plains searching for water. Their daughters have time to go to school. Best of all, there are almost no new deaths from cholera.

We need your support to enable us to do more and provide clean safe water and lasting relief for refugees throughout Africa. Our programs include emergency programs in large refugee camps such as those in Chad providing protection and assistance to Sudanese refugees; to long term water programs in Malawi and Ethiopia. The equipment we need can range from simple jerry cans to hand pumps to high tech satellite imaging systems used by our hydrologists to locate water deep underground.
