Mark Schwarzer

schwarzer webMark Schwarzer is the goalkeeper for the Socceroos and UK Premier League club Fulham. Since becoming a Special Representative in 2006 he has used his profile in the world of sport to promote UNHCR's work. Mark is passionate about providing opportunities to young refugees and is especially interested in promoting UNHCR's education and sport programs.

He has given his support to our Gift of Childhood Appeal that gives young people in refugee camps access to sports programs and facilities. In 2007 he saw these programs for himself when he visited UNHCR's Tham Hin refugee camp on the border of Burma and Thailand. The young football players in the camp were thrilled to have the opportunity to play with one of the world's best keepers.

"Football has opened many doors for me. Being a Special Representative allows me to lend a face and a voice to the silent millions whose lives, for their religion, political views or gender, are at risk. Hopefully, through my involvement with UNHCR, I can make a difference, however big or small, to their quality life and in turn open some doors for them."
