Australians supporting the UN Refugee Agency
Ian Chappell is one of Australia's cricketing legends, serving as the Australian Test Cricket Captain from 1971 to 1975. He travelled extensively for World Series cricket matches and he continues his passion for the sport as a cricketing commentator and sports journalist.
Since taking the role of our Special Representative in 2001, Ian has taken part in a range of public awareness and fundraising campaigns, giving strong support to our appeals for Afghan refugees and UNHCR's emergency operations in Pakistan. Ian travelled to East Timor in 2002 to visit the sports facilities built with Australia for UNHCR's support and to meet those displaced by the violence that followed the elections.
"In East Timor I had the opportunity to see UNHCR's work firsthand. I was deeply impressed by the selfless approach of UNHCR workers, their ability to think laterally and to fully utilise the minimal resources they have at their disposal."
