The plight of the world's millions of refugees and displaced people is one of the great humanitarian crises of our times.
Australia for UNHCR is a not-for-profit organisation that is dedicated to providing life-changing humanitarian support to refugees and other displaced and stateless people supported by UNHCR - the UN Refugee Agency. We achieve this by raising funds for UNHCR's international humanitarian operations and hosting public awareness events and activities around the issue of refugees and international aid and development.
Providing for the world's millions of displaced people and refugees is a huge challenge. The UN Refugee Agency is almost entirely funded by direct, voluntary contributions - mostly from donor countries but also increasingly from individual citizens around the world, the private sector and foundations and trusts.
Our support helps UNHCR respond to humanitarian emergencies when they occur, and to keep providing support long after the media spotlight has faded. We provide vital practical emergency support such as shelter, medicine, blankets, jerry cans and cooking sets. These basic items can mean the difference between life and death for refugees in desperate need.
We also fund projects that would not exist without our Australian donor support. These include projects such as the Safe Mother and Baby programs in Myanmar, Chad and Somalia, and the construction of the first ever secondary school in Nakivale refugee settlement in Uganda. Our maternal health, education, infrastructure and income generating programs are just a few examples of the ongoing support we provide to refugees.
Australia for UNHCR is a registered charity governed by a Board of Directors who generously volunteer their time to the organisation. Our Board is responsible for overseeing our strategic direction and instituting good governance policies and processes. The Board is supported by a committed staff and volunteer team. We also are supported by our Patron and Special Representatives; prominent Australians who work to raise awareness and funds for refugees in need.
Australia for UNHCR is a member of the Australian Council For International Development (ACFID) the peak body representing nongovernment organisations working in the field of international aid and development. We are also a Signatory to ACFID's Code of Conduct. Australia for UNHCR is also a member of the Fundraising Institute of Australia (FIA) the peak body representing charities in Australia.
